Lawrence died in a car crash, which happened on the A40 near Uxbridge. The Jaguar that he was traveling in, careered across the central reservation at some road works and somersaulted on to a Volvo which was traveling in the opposite direction. The Jaguar began to break up on impact and it's engine was hurled 100 yards down the road. Two men in the Volvo were also killed. This happened quite early on and for the whole day I just didn't feel right. I felt that something was wrong, but just couldn't work out quite what it was. I didn't find out that he had died until the early evening, when my Mum called to tell us the terrible news. I was ironing a shirt for work. It was a saturday and I had a weekend job in the local restaurant. It was Brigid who told me the terrible news. She just screamed 'Lawrence is dead, Lawrence is dead.' I was in total shock and didn't believe what I was hearing. My Dad was talking to my Mum on the phone and eventually I went to the phone to speak to Mum. Dad couldn't bear to look at me and went out for a walk. I just can't imagine how terrible he was feeling. Mum was trying to be calm when she spoke to me, and I don't remember anything she said, but we both cried a lot. The rest of the night was awful. We saw a photo of the car crash on the 9 o'clock news. I said is that Lawrence's crash and Brigid said yes. I couldn't bear to watch and went to bed. I spent the night crying and eventually went to sleep in Rosie and Liz's room as I needed to be with someone. They were very young, Liz was 11 and Rosie was 8. I remember them both cuddling me and I wonder now, after all these years, how they were feeling.
